Understanding TRICARE Insurance Coverage for Rehab
The U.S. government provides TRICARE insurance to help meet the physical and mental healthcare needs of the courageous people who serve our country. It’s like other insurance carriers, except it’s unavailable to the general public. This insurance coverage can help finance a portion of your treatment for substance or alcohol use disorders, as well as any co-occurring conditions.
TRICARE is a comprehensive insurance provider that complies with the Affordable Care Act’s requirements. The coverage offered by your policy varies based on factors such as the services you require and the policy’s limits.
Typically, TRICARE insurance coverage for drug and alcohol rehab includes, but is not limited to, the following addiction services:
- Medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
- Medically-supervised detox
- Residential programs
- Inpatient programs
- Partial hospitalization programs
- Outpatient programs
- Relapse prevention programs
The consequences of addiction impact more than the individual misusing substances. They affect the entire family. Family therapy, couples counseling, and other forms of professional support are necessary to recover from the damage addiction truly can cause. For this reason, TRICARE also covers some of these services for family members.
How to Use TRICARE Insurance Coverage for Addiction Treatment
The first step in accessing your TRICARE benefits is to be certain you have applied for coverage. Though it’s available to active or retired members of all branches of the military and their spouses, including Reserve and National Guard members, it’s not automatically provided.
Survivors of deceased military members and former military spouses may also be eligible for TRICARE rehab insurance coverage. Check your eligibility and fill out an application at the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System website or speak to your VA representative.
Once you have an active policy, you can provide Woodland Recovery Center with your insurance information. We are in-network with VA insurance plans, so you will get the highest possible level of coverage your policy allows. You can also independently verify your TRICARE insurance coverage for drug and alcohol rehab by completing the simple form on our website.
Which TRICARE Plan Do You Have?
Your policy type may affect the caps on your TRICARE insurance coverage for addiction treatment. However, all TRICARE plans should cover at least a portion of your treatment services as required by law. Some of the TRICARE plans available include:
- TRICARE Retired Reserve – Available only to Select Reserve members
- TRICARE for Life – Maintains automatic enrollment for those with Medicare Part A and B
- TRICARE Prime – Available to military personnel and families who are not eligible for Medicare
- TRICARE Select – Preferred provider network plan that does not require a primary care manager
- TRICARE Reserve Select – Offered worldwide to Selected Reserve members and their families
You might also choose to carry TRICARE supplemental insurance. A supplemental policy is an additional insurance plan that reimburses some or all of the costs you may incur at a rehab center outside of the VA system. Supplemental and primary TRICARE policies are available through private and military insurance companies.
What Rehabilitation Services Are Not Covered by TRICARE?
While TRICARE offers a wide range of coverage for addiction treatment services, there are certain rehabilitation services that may not be included in your plan. It’s important to know these exclusions to avoid unexpected costs. Here are some of the common rehabilitation services not typically covered by TRICARE:
Experimental Treatments
Procedures or medicines that are still in the trial phase and not recognized as standard medical practice.
Alternative Therapies
Methods like acupuncture, massage therapy, or herbal supplements that fall outside conventional medical approaches.
Specialized Luxury Treatment Centers
Treatment centers that offer high-end amenities like spa treatments, personal chefs, or private rooms beyond what is medically necessary.
Extended Inpatient Stays
Prolonged hospitalization periods that go beyond the medically justified duration.
Unapproved Rehabilitation Programs
Programs not accredited or verified by recognized health organizations.
Recognizing these limitations can help you better plan your rehab journey with TRICARE insurance. This is why it’s important to reach out to Woodland Recovery Center and have one of our team members help you understand your coverage and navigate through the process.
